Rock Camp, Diving into Art, Dance Intensive, Theater Workshop, Explore Ceramics and Jazz Workshop will be happening July 10-14 and July 17-21 in Bridgehampton for summer 2023.

We will be at our Lebanon, NJ campus July 24-28th.

Here is a mini-interview with Carlos Neto to give you a glimpse of what’s happening in Dance Intensive, our dance camp in Long Island (2014 Winner Outstanding Choreography NY Innovative Theatre Awards, 2016 Nominated Favorite Dance Teacher NYC by Backstage Readers Awards).

Dance Intensive, Summer Dance Camp in the Hamptons, Carlos Neto

1. What excites you about teaching Dance Intensive this summer and working with students who are either new to hip hop or who have experience?

It’s always exciting to meet new students in new areas specially those who are new to hip hop and street jazz. I’m looking forward to working with them intensively with enough time to build a foundation and create something special!



2. What is your approach to teaching, overall way of sharing your love of dance with others?

I enjoy teaching students more than just choreography or steps. I aim to give them a strong foundation that will allow them to grow at their own pace as well as serve them when taking other classes in the future.

I also believe it is very important to not focus solely on the dance but find the individual light within every student and push for their individuality and self confidence.



3. What are you excited about in your own work or projects you are working on or plan to start soon?

At the moment I’m part of a documentary about immigrant artists which will be shooting throughout the entirety of 2022. Very excited to see the final result. I’m working on a couple of music videos for 2 very special artists and also gearing up for the start of the new convention tour called Luminous.

The Premier Summer Camp in the Hamptons, Music, Art, Dance, Theater

If you are looking for a different kind of summer camp experience, and curious to explore the worlds of music, art, dance, and theater this summer, then you are in the right spot. In our fine and performing arts camp in the Bridgehampton we have 5 different programs, both day camps and adult afternoon classes, where you can explore and learn new skills while having a lot of fun along the way!

MUSIC - We have Rock Camp during the day, 9-3, where students will learn up to 2 instruments, will be in a morning and afternoon bands, have electives, and perform at an end of the week concert. In the afternoons we have adult lessons from 3-5, and a program called Jazz Workshop for those interested in the world of jazz.

ART - Our art program is called Diving into Art where students learn acrylic paining in our first week and in our second week explore watercolor painting. Like in music there are electives in the afternoon and there is an end of the week student art exhibit for friends, family, and the public. Adult classes are held 3-5 pm.

DANCE - Dance Intensive is structured as a hip hop workshop and meets 3-6 pm. It is led by Carlos Neto one of the leading figures in dance, choreography, and teaching in the world (Alvin Ailey, NYU, Broadway Dance Center). This is designed with students 12-18 in mind, beginners-advanced students welcome.

THEATER - Theater Workshop is a two week program and this summer we will explore the play/musical, Little Shop off Horrors. Theater workshop meets in the afternoons, 3-6 pm.

JAZZ WORKSHOP - Jazz Workshop is an afternoon camp for middle and high school students, college students and adults that meets daily from 3-5 pm. Students play in ensembles and learn the art and craft of playing jazz in terms of rhythm, harmony, and improvisation.

Summer Camp in the Hamptons, a Different Kind of Performing Arts Camp

Tucked away in Hamptons right in Bridgehampton, New York is a summer camp dedicated to students exploring the worlds of music, art, dance, and theater. Our summer camp programs are meant to nurture that inner curiosity for the arts and build it up with skills and inspiration. We want all of our students to learn and have a whole lot of fun with their peers along the way!

In Rock Camp students from beginners-advanced, have lessons on their instrument throughout the day, perform in two different bands, and have many electives. If music is not your thing, we have an art summer camp, Diving into Art which explores acrylic painting one week and watercolor painting the next. If you love to dance, we have an amazing dance camp in the afternoon focussed on hip hop with one of the world’s leading dancers, Carlos Neto. And if you love the stage, we have a theater camp called Theater Workshop which meets for two weeks in the afternoon and will present the musical Little Shop of Horrors. In addition, we have a jazz program in the afternoon for those musicians looking to explore the world of jazz.

All of our camp programs have an end of the week concert, art exhibit, dance recital, and a theater performance. We also have adult classes in music and art in the afternoon for very beginners-advanced students.

How a "Mistake" in Music Can Say So Much, Rock Camp, Jazz Workshop, Dance Intensive, Theater Workshop in New Jersey and the Hamptons

One of the benefits of learning music is you learn to adapt to change in the moment. Creating something whether its music, art, dance, or theater, you have to work as a team, and embracing change is part of that. This is something you will learn and experience at Rock Camp, Jazz Workshop, Dance Intensive, and Theater Workshop in New Jersey and the Hamptons. The bass player may be rushing the beat a little bit, the drummer forgets the cue going to the bridge, an actor forgets a line, a painter makes a brush stroke he didn’t intend. What do you do, especially if it’s during a live performance?

Here is a fascinating video of the great pianist Herbie Hancock talking about making a “mistake” at the piano in a performance with the trumpeter Miles Davis. Herbie talks about cringing when it happened, but then he talks about how MIles Davis heard what happened and altered his notes to make his “mistake” something perfect. Whether you’re 80 years young or 8 years old, engaging in physical activities that involve dance changes you.

From better physical and mental health to a boost in emotional and social well-being, moving your body to the sound of music can transform your life.

Physical

Dance is exercise, so the physical benefits of dancing will be similar to that of other cardio activities.

1. Improves cardiovascular health

The heart-pumping health benefits of dance are right in line with the Department of Health’s physical guidelines for adults. It states for health benefits, adults should do:

  • at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise, or

  • 75 minutes to 150 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity

Professional ballroom dancer and certified personal trainer Leon Turetsky says that all styles of dance make for great cardio workouts since your heart rate gets challenged from executing the different moves.

2. Improves balance and strength

Professional dancer Jonathan Tylicki, the director of education for AKT, a boutique fitness concept rooted in dance, says one of the reasons dance is such a great form of physical fitness is because it incorporates movements on all planes of motion and from all directions.

“Movements that we typically do in our daily life, like walking, taking the stairs, and common workouts like treadmills and cycling, occur in the sagittal plane, but dance works your body from all planes, including lateral and rotational, which turns on and conditions all muscles, meaning no muscle is left behind,” he said.

This type of movement not only increases strength, it also improves balance.

3. Gentle on your body

Many forms of dancing, such as ballroom, are appropriate for people with limited mobility or chronic health issues.

If you have concerns about the intensity of a class, talk with your doctor and the instructor before starting the class. They can help you with any modifications, if needed.

4. Boosts cognitive performance

If you need a reason to get moving, consider this: A lot of research shows how dancing can maintain and even boost your ability to think as you age.

But how does this happen? Well, according to some studies, scientists have found that the areas of the brain that control memory and skills, such as planning and organizing, improve with exercise like dance.

Plus, unlike other forms of exercise, dance has the additional benefits of improving balance through rhythm and music.

5. Challenges your brain

If you’ve ever tried tap dancing, then you know exactly what we mean by dance challenging your brain.

Tylicki points out that the brain power you need to access for dance, specifically, requires you to focus on both the constant changing of movement and recalling moves and patterns.

This is an excellent form of mental exercise for your mind, regardless of your age.

One of the greatest things about dance is that anyone can participate. If you’re able to move, even if it’s only your upper body, you can dance.

This equalizer is what makes dance so popular with people who typically shy away from other forms of exercise.

7. Can be a social activity

While you may prefer to bust a move when no one is watching, there’s something incredible about dancing with others.

Whether you join a ballroom or belly dancing class, dance with friends, or get shaking with your kids or grandkids, being around other people while dancing is good for your social and emotional health.

8. Helps boost your mood

“Movement and dance are extremely expressive, which can allow you to escape and let loose,” Tylicki said. It’s this “letting loose” that helps improve your mental and emotional health by reducing stress, decreasing the symptoms of anxiety and depression, and boosting your self-esteem.

Benefits for kids

Movement and rhythm comes naturally to kids, and when you get a child involved in regular dance classes, the benefits only get better.

Not only does dance allow kids to get their energy out, it’s also a great (and often safe) way for them to express themselves.

Broadway dancer, choreographer, and dance fitness instructor Joseph Corella says the artistic side of dance gives kids the opportunity to learn to speak another language: the language of movement.

Dance training also teaches kids that diligent work pays off.

“If they continue to put in effort in class, they will literally see results in the mirror. It’s such a concrete way for children to see that observing their actions and listening to guidance from teachers, combined with hard work, leads to positive results,” Corella said.

Turetsky points out that dance also helps kids learn discipline, because they have to memorize and execute specific steps and body movements that require practice and perseverance.

Lastly, Turetsky says, they learn teamwork by having to work with other dancers toward a common goal, which translates to so many different areas in life.
