Bridgehampton Summer Camp

Diving into Art Faculty Meeting, Summer Camp 2024, Bridgehampton

Just wrapped up this morning a great meeting with our faculty for our Diving Into Art summer art camp in Bridgehampton happening this July 2024. We talked about a couple things.

1. Fundamentals of Painting and the best way to strengthen them.

We decided that our morning fundamentals class should be divided between drawing and illustration and then a separate part of the class should focus on still life.

2. Electives

We brainstormed a number of electives and in the end we decided that we would offer: Animation and Artist Study (taking a deep look at the techniques of artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and others) took the top of the list. We would also like to explore painting on clothing, printmaking, and other areas of art for this short segment in the afternoon.

A Different Approach, The Premier Camp in the Hamptons

At our summer camp in the Hamptons, located in heart of Bridgehampton, we have a different approach to inspiring students in their interests. It comes down to one word - focus.

Whether you are coming to our summer camp in the Hamptons to explore music (rock camp and/or jazz), art, pottery, theater, dance, or the culinary arts, you will dive deep into your passion with master artists and instructors.

Our camp in the Hamptons is structured in a way where students can choose a day program, 9-2:45 pm, in either music (Rock Camp) or in art (Diving into Art). In the afternoons we have electives, 3-5 pm, in areas such as ceramics, theater, cooking classes, jazz instruction, and adult classes in music, ceramics, culinary, and dance.

At the end of the week, whether its your day summer camp or afternoon elective, you will have a performance, art exhibit, recital, or demonstration for friends, family, and the public. This experience acts as an a mini-milestone for the student and each artist builds an inner confidence that is based on new found skills and inspiration.

A student who was shy discovers her voice on stage. A student who always wanted to play an instrument but was not lucky enough to take music in school, is now performing in a band and playing songs with his or her peers. A student who loves to build things at home is now creating vases on the pottery wheel.

What you see throughout the week is a group of people who come to us with a mixture interest and excitement and who slowly transform into a different person. This happens because students are surrounded by their peers who share their interests, and its also a result of our great teachers. This experience at our arts camp in the Hamptons is bit like watching a caterpillar evolve into a butterfly.

Wishing Our Whole Community an Amazing Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year

Hope you are well, wishing you a merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, and a beautiful new year!

I want to also say
thank you to every single person in our community - our students, parents, school administrators and teachers, our faculty, and our hosts during the summer - for your support, feedback, and enthusiasm for all we did this past year in Rock Camp, Diving Into Art, Dance Intensive, Explore Ceramics, Jazz Workshop, and Theater Workshop. The community we have created over the years is very special.

Bridgehampton Summer Camp, More Than Music, Art, and Dance

Join us at our Bridgehampton summer camp dedicated to music, art, or dance, created to inspire students to explore their chosen art form, learn from expert artists/teachers, make friends, and have fun whole lot of fun along the way. We also have adult classes/lessons in the later afternoons in music, ceramics, and dance.

In our music programs (Rock Camp 9-3 pm, and also Jazz Workshop 3-5 pm), you will have lessons, play in ensembles, take lessons, work with expert musicians/teachers, and have a number of electives. If you are looking to explore the visual arts, we have a painting program called Diving into Art. For one week students explore acrylic painting and in week two there is a program dedicated to watercolor painting. For those interested in ceramics and sculpture, we have Explore Ceramics in the afternoons, 3-5 pm. In dance, students you learn hip hop/jazz in our program Dance Intensive and study with Rosanna Karabetsos (Brooklyn Nets Dance Team). Check out our summer camp schedule in Bridgehampton.

You will also learn that playing music, creating art, or learning dance is about much more than that one particular art form. It’s about give and take and cooperation in real time. It’s about negotiating the time and feel in the music so you find a common pocket, and the music can then soar. It’s about helping your fellow musicians, artists, and dancers learn and learning to others when you need to improve or tweak something in your playing. It’s about learning that everyone has a role in a band, art class, and dance ensemble…it’s about encouraging your fellow musicians/artists/dancers and also offering and taking honest advice on what to fix. It’s about performing with feeling and passion, but remembering to stay focused on stage. It’s about multi-tasking in the sense that one must listen to what he or she is playing in real time AND listen to what your fellow musicians are playing, so the music all fits together.

See you this summer at our Bridgehampton summer camp dedicated to the arts, and feel free to give us a ring if you have any questions, (908) 230-6079, www.HudsonMusicStudios.com.

Music is a Language, Long Island Music Camp, Rock Camp and Jazz Workshop

In our music camp in Bridgehampton, Long Island, we approach learning music in the same way you learn to speak your native language. How is this done?

When we are all kids we lean to speak with words, then phrases, then complete sentences, and as we grow older find ourselves in situations where we need to speak in public to small and large crowds. Along with that we learn in a very intuitive way how to accent certain words and letters to express our ideas and emotions. To deepen our knowledge we learn to read and write and keep refining these skills throughout our life.

Learning music is the same thing. Here is a great video by the bassist, Victor Wooten, diving further into this idea.

Just as a child will have conversations at the dinner table, it’s the same in Rock Camp and Jazz Workshop in Bridgehampton, Long Island. You will play in multiple bands, you will have lessons, you will perform, you will interact with many different musicians (your age and older), and you will have many different teachers. With each teacher and student musician you interact with you will learn and get inspired in a myriad of ways.

So whether you a beginner or advanced musician, come as you are, and get ready to speak music!

Rock Camp and Jazz Workshop in Bridgehampton, Long Island, Starting From Your Comfort Zone

At our summer music camp in Bridgehampton, Long Island in the Hamptons, there are 3 things that serve as the bedrock of what we do:

  1. Learning music.

  2. Having fun and making new friends. This is summer, time to be outside and enjoying ourselves!

  3. Moving out of our comfort zone.

The key to growth in music is a two step process

  1. Start in Your Comfort Zone

Musicians come to us in our music camp in Long Island and New Jersey, with an interest and curiosity with music. We all are starting at different points in our development. One student never had lessons but loves singing along with music, another student had lessons at an early age, another student had lessons years ago and is now coming back to music. It’s all good. Come as you are, and we start from there. You wil be amazed at your growth when you are surrounded by supportive musicians and teachers.

  2. Leave Your Comfort Zone

Whether you are a beginner or advanced musician, our job is to understand your strengths and weaknesses and then nudge you out of your comfort zone. How that is done exactly is really unique to each student. There is no formula, and this is really where the art of teaching comes into play. If someone is challenged and believes he or she can make that leap, he or she will. What inspires someone to make those leaps and grow? In my opinion, it’s a mix of new skills and self-confidence, a confidence that one gains through practice, rehearsals, and performances.

A Unique Hamptons Art Camp in Bridgehampton, Long Island

Whether you are studying acrylic art or watercolors with us at Diving Into Art in Bridgehampton this summer, we believe a strong foundation in drawing gives you the tools to find your own voice when it comes to creating art.

What does this mean exactly?

It means every morning we will learn to draw from a variety of perspectives, work on portraits and different techniques in drawing the eyes, the hands, facial expressions, and landscapes.

In our Hamptons art camp we will look at the masters artists such as Renoir, Picasso, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, Norman Rockwell, Goergia O’Keeffe, and others, and learn their techniques. A huge part of learning is standing on the shoulders of past and current greats, and in the process raising our game along the way. The ironic thing is that by focusing on this type of study, creating artificial boundaries to work on certain concepts, your freedom is expanded when creating your own works. Art Camp in the Hamptons, Diving into Art

Diving into Art, the premier summer art camp in the Hamptons located at our Bridgehampton, NY campus has summer camps and classes for artists of all ages. Our art director, Sophia Santarella, talks below about our art camp that explores acrylic and watercolor painting, each week ending in a “works-in-progress” exhibit for friends, family and the public.

1. What excites you about this summer and our art program Diving into Art in Bridgehampton, both our day camp and our late afternoon adult lessons (3-5 pm)?

I am excited to be engaging with students and building our own little community. The younger students have such a natural intuition towards creating art, It's wonderful to help students cultivate their own creative voice.

For the older students I am very excited to help them develop confidence and skill in art making. The hardest part of making art is getting started and creating freely. I am looking forward to facilitating learning through skill making that will cultivate artistic confidence in students!

2. This summer you will focus Session I (7/18-22) on acrylic painting and for Session II on watercolor painting (7/25). How does an artist change his or her approach with type of painting?

One's approach changes based on the qualities of the material. For example watercolor is known for its airy and transparent appearance, while acrylic is thicker and more opaque. Unlike acrylic, watercolor typically uses the color of the paper as the lightest color.  Working with watercolors requires patience as layering colors is important. Typically the approach to watercolors is working with your lightest colors first as your most transparent layer. From there each layer of water color becomes more opaque as you build up your darker colors.

When painting in acrylic you also work in layers. The difference in acrylic painting is that in this medium you work from dark to light slowly building up your highlights. It is an important distinction that dictates one's approach to each medium. Though there are exceptions to these rules, these approaches help develop strong painting skills in acrylic painting and watercolor painting.
