Music, Art, Dance Summer Camp in the Hamptons, Lessons From a Book About Tennis

All of our arts camps and classes in Bridgehampton, NY - Rock Camp, Diving Into Art, Dance Intensive, Explore Ceramics, and Theater Workshop - are all about exploring each type of and having a whole lot of fun along the way. We want to inspire students and have them internalize how one can rise to new heights with curiosity, practice, and team work.

It’s also worth noting one’s positive attitude and headspace plays an important role when learning something new or improving upon what you already know. There is a book called the Inner Game of Tennis which dives into this. Bill Gates says of the book, “Groundbreaking . . . [ The Inner Game of Tennis is] the best book on tennis that I have ever read, and its profound advice applies to many other parts of life.”

How does this book about tennis apply to our arts camps and classes in the Hamptons? The Inner Game of Tennis basically says that to achieve greatness on the court there is an outer game and an inner game. The outer game would include things like technique, conditioning, strength, agility, etc…. The inner game is about calming any self-doubts, fears of embarrassment, doubt, lapses in focus, or having limiting assumptions.

So how does one go about winning the inner game when it comes to say music performance? At Rock Camp and in all our programs we make sure students understand:

  1. Come as You Are. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artists, we are all learning (literally everyone). So just show up and with a can do attitude, we build from there.

  2. We Are All Human. Mistakes are made all the time on stage…all the time. What’s important is you recover from those mistakes in real time.

  3. With Knowledge and Practice Comes Confidence. You know those butterflies you feel before a performance? Well, they never really disappear, but something very cool happens when you starting gaining real skill and technique. That nervous energy transforms into a something that helps you and gives you momentum….it’s almost as if catch the wave and now you are riding it.

The inner game takes place within the mind of the player and is played against such obstacles as fear, self-doubt, lapses in focus, and limiting concepts or assumptions. The inner game is played to overcome the self-imposed obstacles that prevent an individual or team from accessing their full potential.

Teamwork, The Music and Sports Connection

There are definitely many similarities between sports and music. The importance of teamwork is what first comes to mind. Musicians in Rock Camp, our music camp in Bridgehampton, New York, rehearse and learn the music together, and adjust in real time to what everyone is doing on stage.

Basketball legend, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, says it best.

"The whole idea of teamwork for a basketball team and a jazz group is basically the same.  You have to work within a tight structure of time, space, and rules, and you have to find room for personal expression while supporting each member in time and reacting to what they do in time and space.  Jazz shows how these constrictors can be liberating rather than confining."

Here is a short clip of the basketball legend, Kareem Abdul Jabbar talking about attending his first music concert, Duke Ellington and the jazz-like quality to his playing.  Here is another clip of him speaking at Lincoln Center.  So good!

Summer Arts Camp in the Hamptons

This summer in the Hamptons in July, we have a series of amazing camps to choose from in the arts - music, art, and dance - all taught by master artists. This summer we will also be introducing an afternoon course called Explore Ceramics in which students will create works using clay and a potter’s wheel.

Our lead art teachers, Sophia and Molly, will work with students step-by-step to make sure everyuone is learning the proper techniques in doing both hand work and pieces with the potter’s wheel. After students learn the proper techniques, they will use their ideas and creativity to make a variety of works that will be eventually glazed and fired up in a kiln.

Explore Ceramics meets M-F, the week of July 10-14 and July 17-21. The adult class meets 5-6 pm.

A Unique Summer Camp for the Arts in the Hamptons

We are a camp in the heart of Bridgehampton where students of all ages come to explore the arts - music, art (painting and ceramics), and dance. Whether you enroll in Rock Camp, Diving into Art, Explore Ceramics, or Jazz Workshop in the Hamptons, you will experience an arts experience in a fun and supportive environment with expert teachers. We also have private lessons and classes for adults.

There are so many benefits to attending a summer camp in the arts.

  1. Creative Expression

The arts provide kids with an outlet for creative expression. Whether it's painting a picture, playing an instrument, or acting on stage, artistic activities allow children to express themselves in ways that they might not be able to through other means. Creative expression can help children to develop a sense of identity and build self-confidence.

  1. Critical Thinking

The arts also encourage critical thinking. When kids are creating art or performing, they must think critically about how to convey their ideas effectively. They must consider factors like composition, color, tone, and emotion. Engaging in artistic activities can help kids to develop critical thinking skills that they can apply to other areas of their lives.

  1. Social Skills

Participating in the arts can also help children develop social skills. When kids collaborate on a group project or perform in a play, they must learn to work together effectively. This can help them to build communication and teamwork skills that will serve them well in school and beyond.

  1. Emotional Intelligence

The arts can also help children to develop emotional intelligence. When kids engage in creative expression, they must learn to identify and express their emotions effectively. This can help them to develop empathy and understand the emotions of others.

  1. Cultural Awareness

Finally, the arts can help kids to develop cultural awareness. Exposure to different forms of artistic expression can help children to learn about different cultures and traditions. This can help them to develop a sense of empathy and understanding for people who are different from themselves.

A Unique Kind of Hamptons Summer Camp, 4 Things That Make Us Different

Tucked away in Bridgehampton is a very different kind of summer camp in the Hamptons, one that lets folks of all ages explore the worlds of music, art, dance, and theater.

There are 4 things that make us a different kind of summer camp experience.

  1. This is summer! People of all ages have been in a routine all year - whether that is school or work - so it’s important that the experience be an inspiring, fun, and social experience.

  2. All of our teachers are experts in their chosen field. It’s important to us that all of our teachers have 2 things: a love for sharing their knowledge and teaching, and they are working on their own art form, pushing it forward. Why is this important to us? It cuts down on the fluff and getting lost in theories, students move from point A to point B, very very quickly. It’s remarkable to see.

  3. I want to come back to the social experience here. Creating music, art, dance, and theater is a fulfilling experience, but doing that with others, with new friends, your colleagues, your teachers, that makes the experience an inspiring one.

  4. All of our programs have a performance or an exhibit at the end of the week. Students have to work together, and the deadline of a concert, exhibit, recital, theater performance creates focus. Seeing this transformation in every student is quite amazing.

Music is a Language, Long Island Music Camp, Rock Camp and Jazz Workshop

In our music camp in Bridgehampton, Long Island, we approach learning music in the same way you learn to speak your native language. How is this done?

When we are all kids we lean to speak with words, then phrases, then complete sentences, and as we grow older find ourselves in situations where we need to speak in public to small and large crowds. Along with that we learn in a very intuitive way how to accent certain words and letters to express our ideas and emotions. To deepen our knowledge we learn to read and write and keep refining these skills throughout our life.

Learning music is the same thing. Here is a great video by the bassist, Victor Wooten, diving further into this idea.

Just as a child will have conversations at the dinner table, it’s the same in Rock Camp and Jazz Workshop in Bridgehampton, Long Island. You will play in multiple bands, you will have lessons, you will perform, you will interact with many different musicians (your age and older), and you will have many different teachers. With each teacher and student musician you interact with you will learn and get inspired in a myriad of ways.

So whether you a beginner or advanced musician, come as you are, and get ready to speak music!

A Unique Hamptons Art Camp in Bridgehampton, Long Island

Whether you are studying acrylic art or watercolors with us at Diving Into Art in Bridgehampton this summer, we believe a strong foundation in drawing gives you the tools to find your own voice when it comes to creating art.

What does this mean exactly?

It means every morning we will learn to draw from a variety of perspectives, work on portraits and different techniques in drawing the eyes, the hands, facial expressions, and landscapes.

In our Hamptons art camp we will look at the masters artists such as Renoir, Picasso, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, Norman Rockwell, Goergia O’Keeffe, and others, and learn their techniques. A huge part of learning is standing on the shoulders of past and current greats, and in the process raising our game along the way. The ironic thing is that by focusing on this type of study, creating artificial boundaries to work on certain concepts, your freedom is expanded when creating your own works. Dance Camp in Long Island, 3 Questions for Carlos Neto of Dance Intensive

If you love dance than you are in the right spot because at Dance Intensive in Bridgehampton, NY in Long Island, students reach a new level in terms of their technique, inspiration, and artistry with Carlos Neto’s Hip Hop Workshop.

Here is a mini-interview with Carlos Neto to give you a glimpse of what’s happening in Dance Intensive, our dance camp in Long Island (2014 Winner Outstanding Choreography NY Innovative Theatre Awards, 2016 Nominated Favorite Dance Teacher NYC by Backstage Readers Awards).

Dance Intensive, Summer Dance Camp in the Hamptons, Carlos Neto

1. What excites you about teaching Dance Intensive this summer and working with students who are either new to hip hop or who have experience?

It’s always exciting to meet new students in new areas specially those who are new to hip hop and street jazz. I’m looking forward to working with them intensively with enough time to build a foundation and create something special!

2. What is your approach to teaching, overall way of sharing your love of dance with others?

I enjoy teaching students more than just choreography or steps. I aim to give them a strong foundation that will allow them to grow at their own pace as well as serve them when taking other classes in the future.

I also believe it is very important to not focus solely on the dance but find the individual light within every student and push for their individuality and self confidence.

3. What are you excited about in your own work or projects you are working on or plan to start soon?

At the moment I’m part of a documentary about immigrant artists which will be shooting throughout the entirety of 2022. Very excited to see the final result. I’m working on a couple of music videos for 2 very special artists and also gearing up for the start of the new convention tour called Luminous.

Here is also a glimpse at Carlos’ choreography reel. See you in Dance Intensive!
